Envelopes also are visual with real time nodes that run the length of the modulatuon and amplifier envelopes. Not as fat as the Prophet but still VERY creamy, with wonderful transitional textures. On a whole, maybe only esthetically, the Clav V reminds me of a Prophet 5 at times, but with the added FM. All Arturia stuff now is, and is no longer too small to get serious about. As you know the new GUI is excellent, and very well detailed towards the real article. I got mine on sale, for I think $100 or $150. It would take a whole page to describe even one of its carriers, and modulator path.Īlso, Electronic Musician has a good "master class" that is more informative on the overall structure, starting from a single sine wave. Here's two articles which I found describes the Synclavier very well, without getting overly technical. It's not just FM, so the benefits of altering is not as nuts and bolts, unless you want to go there. I still have a lot to learn, but the initial presets with some tweaking do reward quickly. For my needs, it does fit into its own element of soundscapes. It's also not as brittle sounding as the DX7. You have a few hundred presets, and can expand on that quite fast.
Like the DX7, one could live a lifetime programing it, but the Clav is far more shapable. Harmonic and amplitude controls are a blast. The architecture can be a beast, but you don't have to be a victim of it. The FM portion is easier than comparatively the DX7 and easier to get something interesting out of. What you do get is the same digital beast in all its glory. Not a problem since recording capability today is far superior.
Obviously the digital recording capability is left out, which was a primary reason for the original Synclavir cost (varied by capability, of course). One of the original 3 designers (Cameron Jones) worked with Arturia with the design. What's great about the software version is it is quite literally the Synclavier on steroids.
